Wilton's Middlebrook School Auditorium To Get New Chairs

WILTON, Conn. – From the mouths of kids came word that new seats for the auditorium at Wilton’s Middlebrook School were very much in order.

John Murphy, new facilities director for the Wilton School District, recently told a couple of Middlebrook students about the auditorium seating replacement project. The news was greeted with happiness by the youngsters. “The students said, ‘Oh boy! No more squeaky seats,’ ” Murphy said.

It’s an unusual sight to have an auditorium without chairs of any kind. The auditorium’s old seats are now a thing of the past, removed to make the way for 658 new chairs that should be in place in about three weeks. So the auditorium is closed while construction crews lay down tiles and slots for the new chairs. The new seats should arrive Thursday and should take a week to 10 days to install, Murphy said. The project will cost $115,000.

Many of the old seats were in bad shape, and the district decided it wasn’t worth just fixing them. “They were so old that they couldn’t get parts for them,” Murphy said. “Some seats were cracked in the back. They were not sound anymore. The backs would just give if you leaned on them.”

Murphy said the new chairs should be much better for a facility that is used six periods a day and is also used by the Wilton Children’s Theater.

“If the kids notice it, it leads me to believe that this is a good thing that we’re doing,” he said.
