Wilton Students Dealing With School Days On Break Week

WILTON, Conn. – Alexandra Jones was just fine being at Wilton High School on Wednesday, even though some of her classmates were not on campus.

Alexandra Jones, 17, a student at Wilton High School, is not too upset about Wilton schools being open during what was supposed to be a week off.

Jones, 17, a senior at Wilton High, said she did not lament having to go to school on what should have been the third day of the Wilton Public Schools’ February vacation break.

“I would rather not be here, but it’s not so bad,” she said. “I understand we have to make up for the days we lost.”

The district made the final three days of the break – Feb. 20 to 22 – into school days to make up for days lost to the recent blizzard and last year’s Hurricane Sandy.

Jones said it felt as if half the students were at Wilton High as some of the students took the week off despite the calendar amendments. Jones said it’s not such a big deal if the district maintains the week-long April vacation.

Michael Hoffman, 17, a junior, said Wednesday felt like “a normal day,” though there were three or four students per class missing. Asked if he had an issue being in class when many neighboring districts were closed, he was brief. “Not at all,” Hoffman said. His friend Andrew Danvers, 16, joked that he was still in school because he did not have any other plans for the week.
