WILTON, Conn. Enrollment at Wilton Public Schools is just about in line with projections, but with a few exceptions.
Assistant Superintendent Tim Canty said the enrollment at the schools in the first week is consistent with projections made last October by Ellen Essman. The district was expected to have 4,225 students to begin the 2012-13 school year, down from the 4,262 students in the district to start last year. Classes in Wilton Public Schools began Monday.
However, Canty said there were slightly more than the 285 third-graders anticipated. Although the total number of students in third grade is high, Canty said the district can handle it. Its slightly elevated, but we feel confident that were appropriately staffed and can meet the needs of the students, he said.
Canty said the enrollment numbers in grades one, two, four and five are consistent with the projections, as are the numbers for Middlebrook School and Wilton High School. Projections had 288 first-grade students, 318 second-graders, 373 fourth-graders and 330 entering fifth grade this year.
Middlebrook School was projected to have 1,308 students from grades six to eight and Wilton High School was forecast to have 1,053 students.
The district will have final enrollment numbers in October after doing a school-wide census on Oct. 1. Those figures will be reported to the state Department of Education and shared with the Wilton Board of Education in late October to help to develop the enrollment projections for the 2013-14 school year.
Were still trying to get a clear picture of where (enrollment) is going to land, Canty said.
Canty added that the start of the school year went well at all four the district buildings. Canty, Superintendent Gary Richards and other administrators visited the schools on opening day.
