WILTON, Conn. – The Wilton Board of Education will decide next month if the schools should implement a full-day kindergarten program in the district next year.

The school board had several questions for administration officials last week about the plan to institute a full-day of kindergarten at Miller-Driscoll School. A decision will be made March 7.

Superintendent Gary Richards said it makes sense to expand from the extended-day program that’s been in place for 27 years. Currently, half of the kindergarten students have full days on Wednesday and Friday while the rest have full days on Tuesday and Thursday. “When you have three short days, it’s a rushed event,” Richards said. An entire week of full-day kindergarten will “offer a more balanced experience for our kids. Most districts like ours have gone to full day.

“We feel it will be in the best interest of our kids,” he added.

Several parents have asked the district to hold off on the change, saying full-day classes would be detrimental to the children's education. Some suggested they would tire out after a full week, while others worried about students having less personal interaction with teachers.

Christian Biella of Wilton, however, likes the idea, noting that his daughter Rose, 4, wants to go to school. “I’m a proponent of it,” Biella said. “She (Rose) can handle five full days.”

Richards said the new program will not cost extra money to fund.

The Wilton school system is projecting 244 kindergarten students for the 2013-14 school year, though kindergarten enrollment tends to fluctuate.
