“Attention all Seniors!,” the signs stated. “Two things will happen if you have a negative lunch balance… 1. You will not receive your graduation cap & gown! 2. You will not be allowed to purchase ANY items except for a basic lunch. Please make your life easier by paying up NOW!”
Despite the signs, school officials have reportedly clarified the policy and announced that no students will have their caps or gowns withheld for graduation. The questions came after the Staples student newspaper, Inklings News posted a picture on social media of the signs, accompanied by a photo.
The signs have since been removed this week, and they reportedly were not authorized and were posted by the Chartwells dining services staff. Staples currently uses mySchoolBucks.com, which allows parents or students to deposit funds into individual lunch accounts. If those funds run out, students can still purchase “basic lunches” while incurring a negative balance to be paid off at a later date.
According to Westport News, Principal James D’Amico said that dining staff will have to go through him if they want to post signage in the future, noting that parents and students will receive emails before the end of the year about what they owe and will work to set up a plan with families that may not be able to pay immediately.
