New Wilton School Board Members Find Common Goal

WILTON, Conn. – The three new members of the Wilton Board of Education haven’t been sworn in yet, but they’re looking forward to working with the school system.

Each new member — Laura Schewemm, Chris Finkelstein and Lory Rothstein — came to the school board in a different way. Finkelstein and Rothstein became involved through the Parent Teacher Associations. It seemed a natural progression to Finkelstein.

“You see the inside operations of the school,” Rothstein said of being on the PTA boards and council. She said that involvement brought her to many school board meetings and led her to interact with the superintendent.

Schewemm said she was never on the PTA but took part on many committees and became involved in the schools that way.

All three are concerned about communication between the schools and the community.

“One of the reasons that drew me to the board of ed was I was starting to see this divide between the community and the board of ed in general. And I just thought that we need to come together,” Rothstein said.

It isn’t just about where or how the taxpayers' money is spent, Schewemm said. The communication needs to be improved between the different age groups in town about how students are learning now.

The technology used in schools creates a gap between parents and the older generations who may believe students are just getting “toys and gadgets” to play with, Rothstein said.

Also, all of the women are interested in Wilton High School because all three currently have children there.

“These kids only go through high school once. We get one chance to get it right. If our teachers and our curriculum aren’t giving them the skills they need when they leave Wilton High School at age 18 to be a functioning member of society, then we failed,” Finkelstein said. “I would like to see us work toward making sure that every child gets the tools they need to survive.”
