WILTON, Conn. -- State Sen. Toni Boucher (R-Wilton) is supporting a bill that requires higher education institutions to add sexual assault response teams.

Boucher, ranking member of the Senate's Higher Education Committee, stood with female colleagues from the General Assembly to unveil the proposed legislation.

“We are listening to our students' call for help," Boucher said in a release. "The victims of sexual assault carry this trauma with them for the rest of their lives. This issue is far too serious to ignore.”

The proposed Sexual Assault and Intimate Partner Violence Bill would require higher education institutions to make clear their policies on the issues, require sexual assault response teams to be put in place on campuses and for universities to collaborate with clinics in their area so students have access to free care.

“It is important that we make sure new procedures, policies and programs are in place to ensure other students or staff member do not have to endure what those brave women went through,” said Boucher.

The push behind this bill stems from several female students who stepped forward to say they had been sexually assaulted at the University of Connecticut and were not helped nor did they feel safe. Boucher said

Boucher added that he would like to debate mandatory reporting by employees and impose sanctions for failing to report a sexual assault, according to the release.

“It is a delicate issue, but oversight of campus police is important,” she added.

Boucher represents the 26th District, including Bethel, New Canaan, Redding, Ridgefield, Weston, Westport and Wilton.
