Wilton Looks To Boost Local Economy With Development Board

WILTON, Conn. – Attracting new businesses and making the climate better for those already in town are among the reasons Wilton officials said they are creating an Economic Development Commission.

The town is looking for “a multifaceted plan” to improve the town’s economic base, First Selectman William Brennan said. “The more businesses and retail shops you have, you grow the tax base,” he said.

The Board of Selectmen voted last week to establish the commission. It hopes to fill out the membership at its next meeting July 2.

The town had been considering ways to focus on the local economy, including finding new shops and assisting the businesses already in town, Brennan said. He said he wants businesses to have a support system after they arrive in town, calling that development “a continuous process.”

The commission could have seven to nine members. The selectmen were prepared to seat the commission last week but opted to hold off to see whether any women were interested in joining the group. The original list of candidates at Monday’s meeting contained only men.

The candidates should include people with the best set of skills to assist the commission, regardless of gender, Brennan said.
