WILTON, Conn. — A 59-year-old New York woman was arrested and charged with reckless driving after her vehicle crashed into the back of a Wilton police SUV on Route 7 in Wilton on Tuesday, sending the officer to Norwalk Hospital, police say.

The accident occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. near Crowne Pond Lane. The police SUV, occupied by Detective Kip Tarrant, was stopped within a coned utility zone in the right southbound lane of Route 7 to alert motorists of a work zone ahead, the accident report says.

The SUV was rear-ended by a Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling south on Route 7 in the right lane, the report says. The driver was identified as Janet Goltz from Patchougue, N.Y.

Tarrant, 57, was sent to the hospital with injuries. He was released later in the day and will be out of work for a few days, Capt. John Lynch said.

Goltz complained of injuries but refused medical treatment, police said. The crash investigation found that Goltz may have fallen asleep at the wheel, police say.

She was charged with reckless driving, failure to have insurance and failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police said.
