WILTON, Conn. — A 46-year-old Norwalk man is accused of trying to burglarize a home on Seir Hill Road in Wilton on Friday, police said.

At approximately 3 p.m., Friday, a resident of Seir Hill Road called police and reported that a man had entered her home, police said. The woman told police that she heard her doorbell ring, but when she went to answer the door, no one was there, the report said.

Shortly after, a man entered the home through an unlocked rear door and upon seeing the woman, said he was looking for someone else, according to the report. The man quickly left the home and drove away in a gray Ford Explorer, police said.

The homeowner wrote down the vehicle’s license plate number and provided it to police. That led officers to the home of Ernest Bailey, police said.

Bailey, who was on parole for past convictions, admitted going to the home but denied going inside, police said. He was taken into custody and charged with criminal attempt to commit third-degree burglary, a felony. He was arraigned in Norwalk Superior Court on Monday.

At 4:15 p.m. Friday, another Seir Hill Road resident reported their home had been burglarized sometime within the past two hours, police said. The resident told police that various items inside the home had been moved and that approximately $5 in loose, assorted change was missing, the report said. Also reported missing were two older cell phones, police said.

The home seems to have been entered through an unlocked door, police said.

Bailey is being investigated as possible suspect in that burglary.
