The incident took place in Westport at Bedford Middle School on Thursday, Jan. 27, said Lt. David Wolf of the Westport Police Department.
Following the accusation, in which a student told police that engineering and design teacher Arthur Ellis, age 72, of Westerly, Rhode Island, had inappropriately touched them in December 2021, an extensive investigation began, Wolf said.
Following the accusation, Ellis was immediately placed on leave, school officials said.
Based on the results of the investigation, a warrant was issued for Ellis's arrest, Wolf added.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, April 27, Ellis turned himself in at the Westport Police Department.
Per the warrant, he was charged with sexual assault and risk of injury to a child.
Ellis was released after posting a $100,000 bond.
