Driver Charged With Blocking Ambulance In Wilton

WILTON, Conn. – A Danbury driver who refused to move out of the way of an ambulance last month faces charges after being arrested last week, Wilton police said.

Police charged Matt Klein, 42, of Rose Lane, last Wednesday with second-degree breach of peace and obstruction of an emergency vehicle.

The Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps was responding to an emergency call at 6:30 p.m. May 27 on Danbury Road when ambulance members told police that Klein refused to move over to the right lane when the ambulance was behind him.

After Klein eventually moved over, he honked a handheld airhorn at the ambulance and flashed an obscene gesture, police said. Police obtained a warrant for Klein’s arrest.

Officers heading to a conference saw Klein’s vehicle on Route 7 in Norwalk last Wednesday. Wilton police made a traffic stop and arrested him with the assistance of Norwalk police.

Police said Klein was remorseful, saying he was upset that he had a $1,800 bill from a previous ambulance trip. Klein was released on $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear July 2 in Norwalk Superior Court.

The following items were also reported by the Wilton Police Department:

• A pair of 15-year-old Wilton boys hit a 39-year-old man with a shot from an airsoft gun June 8 at a home on Hurlbutt Street, police said. Wilton police charged the boys last Tuesday with second-degree reckless endangerment and third-degree assault.

• Police were investigating a car vs. pole accident that happened at about 1:17 a.m. last Sunday on Route 7. Steven Tuin, 45, of Wilton, told police he was traveling north near Wilton Acres Road when a vehicle traveling south drifted into his lane, forcing him to swerve. Tuin went off the road and hit a power pole. He was not injured, police said.

Connecticut Light & Power crews spent nearly 10 hours clearing the downed pole and replacing it with a new one. There was no indication that alcohol played a role in the wreck, police said.
