WILTON, Conn. Wiltons Cannon Grange was awarded the WasteWise nonprofit organization partner of the year from the Environmental Protection Agency for reducing the amount of waste produced at the building.
The Grange, a nonprofit organization based in a Cannondale building built in 1899, diverted 77 percent of possible waste in 2010, an increase of 5 percent from 2009.
To achieve this, Cannon Grange changed many of its practices, particularly switching to disposable cutlery, flatware and table cloths to reusable versions. The change saved nearly 1,500 pounds of waste from being produced.
An aggressive recycle and composting initiative was also instituted at the Grange. A total of 500 pounds of excess foods not consumed were provided to needy persons rather than to discard the foods, or were composted, says a report on the groups initiatives.
Much of the efforts involved the separation of garbage and recyclables and cardboard.
