Wilton To Explore More Creative Signage

WILTON, Conn. – Care to see a sign for a fish store resemble a fish? Or a sweetshop marker in the shape of cotton candy?

On the premise that merchants' signs make a downtown area more inviting, members of the Wilton Planning and Zoning Commission plan to discuss how to make signs in Wilton Center and elsewhere more creative.

Planning Commissioner John Wilson said a commission committee will meet in about two or three weeks to talk about the current stock of signage in Wilton Center and what can be done to encourage creativity. The idea is the brainchild of First Selectman Bill Brennan.

“When merchants are looking to do new signs (we'd like them) to do something more creative, more than mundane and standard signs we’ve come to expect,” Wilson said. He referenced places like Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts and Essex, Conn., as examples.

Nothing is set in stone yet and there will be no requirements for signage, Wilson said. “We’re sort of open at this point,” he added.

Town officials have been trying to promote Wilton Center, the town’s primary commercial area. The Wilton Chamber of Commerce hosted its first Sidewalk Sales on Saturday.
