Wilton To Cast Ballots on Beer Sales

WILTON, Conn. – Election Day is approaching, and with it Wilton has a question to answer. On the town ballot this year is a referendum: “Shall the sale of alcoholic liquor under Grocery Store Beer Permits be permitted in Wilton?”

The town voted in 2009 to allow liquor sales. Since then, four new liquor stores have opened. Mitchell Ancona, owner of Ancona’s Wines & Liquors, applauds democracy in action but says he worries about his sales if the town question passes.

First Selectman Bill Brennan described the vote on grocery store beer sales as “an evolution. It’s an evolution of the reality of the situation,” and he believes that this new addition to the liquor laws in Wilton will pass.

Brennan is also on the ballot this year. He is up for re-election, for the third time, but is running unopposed. “I was really surprised this time. It’s a four-year term, and to get a free ride for a four-year term I take it as a compliment,” he said.

And it isn’t just Brennan who is running unopposed this year: All the candidates are running unopposed.

Voters will also cast their ballots for two selectmen for four-year terms, two selectmen for two-year terms, and members of the Board of Finance, Board of Education, Board of Assessment Appeals, a full term on the Planning and Zoning Commission, a two-year vacancy on the Planning and Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, a full-term alternate and two-year alternate on the Zoning Board of Appeals, and constables.

The polling stations will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Polling places are located at:

• District 1 - Wilton High School David Clune Center for the Arts

• District 2 - Driscoll School Gym

• District 3 - Middlebrook School Gym

If you don’t know your district number, go to the Wilton voters website and type in your address to determine where to cast your vote.
