Wilton Police Dispose of Residents' Old Meds

WILTON, Conn. – If you have old prescriptions taking up space in your medicine closet,  the Wilton Police Department will gladly take them off your hands and dispose of them properly.

A large green container has been placed in the police department’s front room for  residents to dispose off unwanted medications.

It has been there about six weeks and has already been emptied three times, Police Lt. Donald Wakeman said. Each time it was “overflowing,” he said.

“I think it’s been a tremendous asset, because there are a lot of people looking to get rid of their old medications,” Wakeman said. “It’s certainly serving its purpose.”

When the drugs are collected, they are brought to Bridgeport for incineration, Wilton Police Chief Michael Lombardo said. The department has teamed up with New Canaan and Westport to bring have one person bring all the meds to Bridgeport, he said.

“I think there has just been a movement to gradually get people to stop dumping old medications down a toilet,” Wakeman said. “It’s a part of not contaminating the water way.”
