WILTON, Conn. - Nearly 60 Wilton residents and town officials gathered Tuesday at the Wilton Fire Department headquarters for the towns Sept. 11 ceremony.
The terrorist attacks of 11 years ago ended the lives of nearly 3,000 people in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Shanksville, Pa. Five Wilton residents were among those who died that day.
Deputy Wilton Fire Chief Jack Amatrudo said it was important for the town to pause and remember the day and the victims. He asked people to take an active role in honoring those lost by volunteering to help in their community and doing more than making a post on Facebook. We should help each other out, Amatrudo said.
For Gary and Gail Rauch of Wilton, it was important to be on hand to show support for the families and first responders. Its for my own soul and its to show support for the people who lost their lives, Gail Rauch said.
I just dont think we can allow (Sept. 11) to fade into memory, Gary Rauch said.
State Rep. Gail Lavielle, R-Wilton, said it was important and reassuring to see Wilton residents come out to share their feelings about the day. I think people still care. Its very important for this part of the country and this part of the state, she said.
