WILTON, Conn.  – Martin Sancho knows he will need to pick up a few things in a few days as Hurricane Sandy appears likely to hit Wilton and the rest of Fairfield County.

“I have to get water, batteries and food,” said Sancho as he left the Stop & Shop supermarket in Wilton Center. But he’s not panicking yet. Not until he hears more about how bad the storm will be. “You just have to wait and hope for the best,” he said.

Initial forecasts suggest Sandy will be a Category 1 hurricane by the time it reaches Connecticut late Monday.  Wilton emergency officials will meet at 8:15 a.m., Friday, to discuss the situation, said Wilton Deputy Fire Chief Jack Amatrudo. “We won’t have an accurate forecast until the first thing (Friday) morning,” Amatrudo said.

John Rider, an assistant manager at the Wilton Stop & Shop, said he had not heard much talk Thursday about the storm from customers, though he expects the supermarket will be packed with shoppers over the weekend. “We’ve got to get more water and bread and milk,” he said.

Tom Sato, owner of the new Wilton Hardware store slated to open next Thursday, said he’s monitoring the weather reports and will consider opening earlier based on where the store is with preparation.
