WILTON, Conn. Its a sure bet Wilton Center will welcome tents and tables back to the sidewalks next year.
The first ever Wilton Chamber of Commerce Village Fair and Sidewalk Sales went great, chamber Executive Director Janeen Leppert said. Hundreds of people last weekend visited Old Ridgefield and River roads along with other streets in the towns main shopping area, which is exactly what the chamber was looking to see.
We couldnt have asked for a better day, Leppert said. We had people come from other towns. A lot of people werent even familiar with the areas of the center and they were thrilled.
Leppert said merchants were overwhelmingly positive about the sidewalk sales, created to bring traffic to the towns shopping district. Neighboring towns like New Canaan and Darien have had sidewalk sales for several years. Wilton merchants in the past have put out tables and tents at different times throughout the summer, but this is the first event organized by the chamber to get nearly all stores involved.
Michelle Sperry, owner of Fleur De Lis Dance Academy, described Wilton Center that day as a summer version of a holiday postcard.
Peg Koellmer, incoming president of the chamber, also was happy with the turnout and is looking forward to next years event and more businesses taking part.
Anything that can make the downtown section more attractive from a real estate perspective is wonderful, said Koellmer, who is a Realtor at Realty Seven. Anything we can do not only attracts home buyers, but shoppers.
