Emergency Info Tools Get Updated in Wilton

WILTON, Conn. – The Emergency Operations Center in Wilton is going social.

Communication between the emergency center and residents is key, and the town should look at the use of social media and other tools for improvements, Wilton Fire Chief Paul Milositz said in a report to the Board of Selectmen.

Using popular social networking sites as a way to spread emergency information is something that Milositz, also the town’s emergency management director, is looking into.

“We developed (the) Facebook page shortly after Hurricane Irene and have been looking into the uses since then,” Milositz said. “As we learn how to do this better, it will become a better tool for us to use.”

The same is true for the town’s use of Twitter. Milositz said social media outlets – once figured out – will join the many official sources of emergency information.

“The town webpage — this is the primary, or should be the primary, source for emergency updates for everybody in town,” Milositz said. “This is by far the best place to start looking for our residents if they need information an emergency.”

The Code Red Call was also an effective tool for the town during the Halloween snowstorm and Hurricane Irene.

Milositz was firm in saying that the Code Red Calls will be for severe town emergencies similar to those two storms but will not be for regular winter snowstorms.

However, to get the Code Red call, it is necessary to sign up. To do that, Milositz said there is a CODE RED button on the town website to fill out. Residents can sign up as many phones as desired – including cellphones.
