Dog to Join the Wilton Police Force

WILTON, Conn. – It won’t be as articulate as Scooby-Doo, but the Wilton Police Department is looking for a dog to help solve crimes.

Wilton Police Chief Michael Lombardo said the department has been searching for an officer to become the K-9 handler. At the moment, Lombardo says, there are three officers still in the running.

The candidates will have final interviews with Lombardo and two K-9 handlers from other departments. Lombardo said he hopes to have an officer assigned by the end of April.

“I’m not asking for any money from any of the town funds,” said Lombardo. The goal would be to bring in enough private money to fund the program for several years.

A police dog would enable the department to expand the types of work it does, in drug searches, for example, the chief said.

“Handlers are crucial to the entire project being successful,” Lombardo said, and getting the right one is key because the officer would be a liaison to the community.
