WILTON, Conn.-- The Wilton Family YMCA is offering four new teen clubs as part of its fall and winter program sessions.

Youth in Government gives high school students an opportunity to learn firsthand about government and civic issues by taking an active role in the democratic process. Students participate in local meetings each week that give training in a number of areas, including: identifying issues, writing bills and advocating for their passage and debating positions.

Students will take two trips to the capitol in Hartford to attend statewide student-run conferences as simulated legislative assemblies. Meeting times have yet to be announced.

Leaders Club, which will meet from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, works with students in grades 6-8 on developing positive life skills and leadership qualities by connecting members to community service projects with local businesses and non-profits. The club focuses on assessing and understanding community needs, cultural diversity and team building projects.

The Book Club encourages students ages 12-15 to stimulate their minds and share a passion for reading through books selected by the group, which reflect diverse interests. It also will meet from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

Finally, Sister Circle Girls’ Empowerment Group will cover topics such as peer pressure, healthy living routines, body image and building positive relationships. The group also has a number of activities planned, including healthy eating and cooking, group workouts, ropes course, money management, self-defense and automotive maintenance. Meeting time for the Sister Circle group is 3:30-4:30 p.m. Mondays.
