Wilton Quilter Taking Star Turn In International Contest

WILTON, Conn. — A quilter from Wilton will be showing off her work and competing among the world's best in her craft as she joins the 2016 AQS QuiltWeek as a semifinalist.  

Carolina Asmussen from Wilton will show off her work "Botanical Garden" (above) at the 2016 AQS QuiltWeek at Des Moines, Iowa. The show will be Oct. 5 to 8, at the Iowa Events Center. Her work will be displayed along with 213 others in this AQS contest. 

First, Second, and Third Place prizes in seven categories will be awarded, along with seven overall awards, including Best of Show. Winners will be announced at the show and posted on the AQS website,

More than $50,000 will be awarded, including $10,000 for the Best of Show and $3,500 each for Best Wall Quilt, Best Use of Color, Best Original Design, Best Hand, Best Home, and Best Longarm Workmanship. 

Regardless of how "Botanical Garden" places in the final judging, all semifinalists ́ quilts will be displayed at the show, which is expected to draw more than 15,000 people. 

“The quilters submitted hundreds of beautiful quilts for the inaugural AQS QuiltWeek in Des Moines. This event is an art show with fibers as the medium,” AQS Founder and President Meredith Schroeder says. 

Quilts were entered in this international contest from 38 US states and 10 countries.

The American Quilter’s Society hosts several shows annually, each with its own contest. Besides the Des Moines, Iowa, show, in 2016 AQS hosted other prestigious shows in Phoenix, Ariz.; Daytona Beach, Fla.; Lancaster, Penn.; Paducah, Ky.; Syracuse, N.Y.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Chattanooga, Tenn.
