“This is awesome,” said Sam, 10, donning a black-and-white pinstriped suit along with some huge blow-up shoulders on Tuesday afternoon at Wilton’s Cider Mill School. As for which candy he favored, Sam didn’t play favorites. “All of them,” he said.
Sam and hundreds of other Wilton kids got to celebrate Halloween and stock up on sweetness at a special "Trunk Or Treat" event outside the elementary school. Rather than going to homes, the kids dropped in on the backs of SUVs and other vehicles parked in the school parking lot.
Brothers Artie and John DiRocco set up the event in advance of knowing that Wilton town officials would postpone traditional trick-or-treating with safety on town roads a concern because of the trees and power lines down following Hurricane Sandy.
Artie DiRocco said he contacted parents via email days earlier to set it up. A similar event set up last year attracted about 100 people. This year, the Cider Mill parking lot was awash in color as kids were dressed in all types of costumes, from football players to witches to nerds to Teletubbies.
“Between us, we have 12 kids. What are we gonna do if the kids can’t have Halloween?” Artie said.
The brothers said the parents found the Trunk Or Treat easier than normal Halloween. “There’s no stress and you’re done in an hour,” John said.
Sam’s mother Tricia said it was good to let kids have their Halloween instead of having to wait. “I think it’s wonderful,” she said. “It’s great for the community to make this happen.”
