FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Wilton-based Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is going to help Fairfield County Moms get fit fast.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will hold a kickoff celebration Saturday at The Fairfield Library to spur Fairfield County mothers on a nine-week fitness program that will culminate with a 5-mile run/walk on Nov. 24 in Wallingford.

Nicole Carrea, who is organizing the program for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, hopes to have 20 to 25 women participate. The fee is $50 to register, and participants will be asked to raise $500 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Carrea said 90 percent of the proceeds will go toward the cause.

“It’s a way for them to support a worthy cause, but also do something for themselves,’’ she said. “There’s also a huge social aspect to it. If a woman is just having her first child, she may not have many friends in that environment. This is a good way to make friends, socialize and get fit at the same time.”

The women will train once a week on Saturdays at Jennings Beach in Fairfield. Under the supervision of certified coaches, the group will train for one hour with a mix of running, walking and cross training. The women will also be encouraged to do some training outside of the program.

“They don’t have to come every week,’’ Carrea said. “And they can work at as high an intensity level that they’re comfortable with. Kids can come with them if they’re in a stroller and that can be part of the training.”

The program is modeled after a similar program that worked last year in New York City, she said. It also represents a new outlet for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which frequently has athletes raise money and compete in endurance events such as the New York City Marathon.

“Here it’s less about the event and more about the weeks leading up to it,’’ Carrea said. “The final week will be the five-mile race, and that’s the celebration of the journey.”

At the kickoff, women will receive a training schedule, tips from coaches, learn fundraising strategies and meet other women who will be entering the program. Kids are welcome. Carrea said the initial response, by women and supporters, has been spectacular.

“A lot of the people who have already joined didn’t come from our Team In Training program,’’ she said. “They didn’t have a connection with the running world. Some will graduate and end up signing up for a half marathon at some point down the road. For others it’s a stepping stone. We’ve had positive results from businesses. They wanted to rally around these Moms and get them ready. We’re excited with how it has been received.”
