Kindness, Exercise Among Wilton's 2013 Resolutions

WILTON, Conn. – If Tina Loria is going to talk with her students at Wilton’s Building Blocks Early Learning Center about New Year’s resolutions, she might as well get in on the act herself.

Loria, who lives in Wilton, has her own plans on making things better in her life in 2013. Namely eating better and working out more often.

“It’s always been a common practice,” she said. “It’s a good way to start the year.”

Loria is not alone in making a vow to start 2013 on a positive note. Many Wiltonians have or are thinking about what they can change to feel better about themselves or to make the lives of others a touch nicer.

Cathryn Duemmler, 18, a student at Fairfield University, plans to participate in performing random acts of kindness, a movement inspired by NBC television personality Ann Curry in the wake of the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

“I might buy some movie tickets for someone or pick up their grocery bill,” said Duemmler, who is spending a portion of her holiday break working at the Village Market in Wilton Center.  She recalled how someone had bought a candy bar for her last year.

Jonathan Highland, 16, a student at St. Joseph High School, said he also may do random kind things for people. In previous years, he worked on eating better and exercising more often. As beneficial as it was, Highland admits it’s hard work.

“You have to follow through. There’s a lot of distractions,” he said.

Joe McGowan, 52, plans to exercise often and travel more in the coming year.

“I want to be less stressed…and more Zen,” he said.
