The session will delve into creating apps for smart phones, computers and tablets with "Breaking Code: Create What's Behind Angry Birds and Other Fun Apps." The one-hour session for adults and children six and up is part of Computer Science Education Week.
"People spend hours in front of their computers, tablets and smart phones watching those birds and pigs flying around in that wildly popular app wondering what is the best way to win; but the real question is: “How do they do that?" library representatives said.
Residents are invited to bring their own personal devices such as tablets, smart phones, and laptops, or use the computers that will be set up by the library for the sessions. Participants will be able to go at their own speed through each level to try out the basics of computer science.
“With the library’s drive to bring more comprehension of technology to all our constituents, these one-hour coding sessions seem like an excellent opportunity to initiate that process," said Elaine Tai-Lauria, Wilton Library’s executive director. "In the months ahead, we’ll be introducing our new Maker Space area with 3-D printing that will be open to everyone; our teen Robotics Team is moving full-speed ahead with its project; and we’ll be providing more programs about mobile devices, apps and so much more.”
Susan Lauricella, head of Teen Services for the library, brought the idea of participating in the Computer Science Education Week celebration to a core group at the library, representatives said.
“We got a group of us together in the library and started looking at the 'Hour of Code' website," she said. "We were immediately hooked, both geeks and non-geeks among us. We thought it was fun and it really jelled nicely with our mission of the library to inform, enrich, connect and inspire our community.”
