Jerry Sullivan, 78, Retired Accounting Executive

WILTON, Conn. — Jerry Sullivan, a resident of Wilton and retired partner at the accounting firm Coopers & Lybrand, died Saturday. He was 78 years old.

Sullivan was born Aug. 21, 1933, in Chicago. He had lived in Wilton for 30 years and formerly lived in Columbus, Ohio, and Pittsburgh. He graduated from Duquesne University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and received a master's in accounting from George Washington University. He went to work at Coopers & Lybrand (C&L) in 1958 and was made a partner in 1964. He retired in 1988. He also served as chairman of the Auditing Standard Board of the AICPA.   

Sulllivan was executive director of the Public Oversight Board (POB) from 1989 through March 2002. From 2002 on, he served as an expert witness on auditing matters. He was also a director and chairman of the audit committee for the Pitcairn Company. His career in auditing spanned 53 years and included such honors as the Sells Award and the 1996 Distinguished Service Auditing Award. 

Sullivan's greatest joy was his family and friends and all the moments shared with them. He took great pleasure in attending the games of his grandchildren and cheering them on. He also loved traveling, gourmet food sports cars and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Margaret (Peggy) Ann Quinlan Sullivan; four sons, Mark and his wife, Elaine, Thomas, Daniel and his wife, Pamela, and Michael and his wife, Kelly; a daughter, Mara Lamanna and her husband, Ben, all of Wilton; a daughter-in-law, Sarah Sullivan of Ridgefield; 16 grandchildren; a brother, Robert Sullivan of Grapevine, Tex., and a sister, Suzanne Leiter of Columbus, Ohio.

A Mass will be celebrated Friday, Dec. 16, at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Danbury Road, Wilton, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan, on Thursday, Dec. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m.
