Wilton Wants Your Hazardous Waste

WILTON, Conn. – The Wilton Public Works Department will have its hazardous waste collection day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Miller Driscoll School.

As you gather your unwanted household products for collection, remember that not all paint should be brought to the event.  Oil-based paints and stains are collected at the event because they are manufactured with chemicals that require specialized disposal.  If the label suggests you use paint thinner or mineral spirits for cleanup, then that paint is likely an oil-based product.

Water –based paints and stains, often called “latex paint,” are not collected because it is safe to mix those paints with your regular household garbage.  If the label recommends soap and water cleanup, then the paint is likely a water-based paint.

Once you have sorted your old paint, you may be left with several cans of half empty water-based paint cans.  The Conservation Commission recommends that you remove the lids from these cans and allow them to dry to a solid state before disposing of them in your household trash.  You can also add cat litter to the paint can to absorb the paint creating a solid lump inside the can.  This mix should be disposed of in your household trash.

Other common household products that will be accepted at the event include:
