WILTON, Conn. -- The Wilton Family YMCA will offer two levels of lifeguard training in courses offered from Tuesday, Aug. 19, to Saturday, Aug. 23, from 3:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Waterfront Lifeguarding certification allows guards to be employed at any non-surf waterfront such as the Wilton Y, Westport beaches and summer camps. All participants must be able to swim 550 yards, retrieve a 10-pound weight from the bottom of the pool, and tread water with no hands for two minutes. Testing will be done on the first day of the session. Cost is $425 for Y members, $475 for nonmembers.
A Lifeguard Instructor Class is also offered for those who have aquatic teaching experience and excellent lifeguarding skills. Pre-screening by the Y Aquatics Department staff is required. The course follows American Red Cross guidelines. The cost is $400 for the session.
