WILTON, Conn. -- Kids can return to Colonial times and learn how to churn butter during a special workshop held by the Wilton Historical Society on Saturday, June 25.

The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will teach children in grades 4 through 8 a Colonial recipe used in the Connecticut region for making butter and learn a rhyme or two to make the process go faster.

While the food is prepared, the children will learn about Colonial manners, morals and way of life. This month, the children will be making strawberry butter, first turning cream into butter with a churn dash, and then stirring in sweet strawberries.

The workshops feature relatively simple dishes made with local, seasonal ingredients. The recipes used will be adapted for modern kitchens. This is done for safety reasons, and also so that the attendees can recreate their meals at home.

All participants will sample their own cooking and take home recipe cards, as well as any leftovers. The children will learn how a Colonial kitchen would have operated, in order to appreciate the modern conveniences they may take for granted.

The society is located at 224 Danbury Road. Admission is $15 for members and $25 for non-members. Space is limited, register by contacting (203) 762-7257.
