The red, white and blue "Coming soon CVS" sign is visible from Route 7 and Branchville Road. Another CVS sign is in front of the building.
Ancona’s Market closed in January after 94 years in business in Ridgefield, although next door Ancona’s Wines & Liquors remained open at 720 Branchville Road.
The CVS is slated to open in August in the strip mall, according to Hamlet Hub. CVS has all the permits needed to convert the interior of the building into a drug store, Hamlet Hub said.
At the time Ancona's Market closed, the owner said a new tenant would be moving into the building and said a specialty market with Ancona’s products would fill the remaining space.
“This is incredibly bittersweet,,’’ Joe Ancona wrote on Facebook back in January. “The new tenant opportunity came at a moment in time when it has become increasingly hard to compete with all of the food market choices in close proximity despite our best efforts.”
The Ancona family built a three-story building fronting Route 7 in Ridgefield in 1920. The existing building opened off Branchville Road in the early 1980s. The store had seen increasing competition in the past few years. Caraluzzi’s, a Bethel-based store, opened less than a mile away on Route 7 in Georgetown in 2003.
“We hope everyone will be excited when the new development is complete, and the Ancona family is committed to continuing to serve the community that we have been a part of for almost a century,” Joe Ancona wrote.
