Weston Grows Weary of Snow, Rain

Reg Bowden is happy he lives on high ground in Weston, especially after Sunday night's flood forced several residents to evacuate their homes. The late winter storm wreaked havoc on Fairfield County – disabling vehicles, knocking out power, closing roads and canceling schools.

In all his 30 years in town, Bowden said he has never seen a flood as severe. "This is by far the worst water problem and flooding problem that we've had," he said.

The Weston Volunteer Fire Department responded to at least three houses for emergency evacuations, said volunteer Mark Blake. "We took them to a safe place, like a neighbor's down the street," Blake said. "Nobody got hurt."

[breakhere] The fire department has two four-wheel drive vehicles that were used, but Blake said some areas were too deep even for those trucks. One woman was driving on Valley Forge Road when her car got stuck in rising waters, Blake said. By the time emergency responders arrived, she had removed herself from her vehicle and was waiting safely for the fire department. Her car later became engulfed in the Aspetuck River and wasn't removed from the road until Tuesday.

Melting snow in the headwaters contributed to the flooding, Blake said. Forecasters are predicting more rain for Thursday, with a 90 percent chance in the afternoon and evening. Much of the snow has melted, so Blake said he doubts Weston will experience anything as severe this time around.

People should not drive through a road that is covered in water because it can be impossible to estimate the water's depth, he said.

Some residents may be happy that at least it wasn't more snow. But with the extreme Super Moon coming next week, doomsday soothsayers believe our crazy precipitation is just the beginning.
