WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport captured its second softball state title of the summer on Saturday when the 10-and-under team beat Seymour, 4-0, in a game played at Unity Park in Trumbull.
Westport also won the state 11-and-under championship. The 10-year-old state champions move on to the East Regional Tournament beginning Saturday in Back Mountain, Pa.
Westport went 3-0 in the state tournament, and shut out Seymour twice. Its other game was a 4-2 win over Vernon/Rockville.
Pitcher Morgan Carnahan fired a one-hitter with 11-strikeouts in the championship game win. Grace Alfero's RBI triple highlighted a four-run second inning for Westport. Carnahan, Kate McDonald and Olivia Stubbs also had RBIs for Westport.
Westport advances to the East Regional where it will play its first game on Saturday at a time to be determined. Teams from Maine, Vermont and Rhode Island are also in the New England bracket. Click here to visit the East Regional website.
The state tournament proved to be the easiest test Westport has had this summer. In the District 2 tournament, Westport went 3-1 in pool play before winning two straight in the elimination round. In the Section 1 tournament, Darien pounded Westport, 10-1, to force a winner-take-all game. Westport won, 2-1.
Earlier in July, Westport's 11-year-olds also won a state championship.
