WESTPORT, Conn. - Two teams going in opposite directions abruptly changed course in the opening round of the Fairchester Athletic Association playoffs. Drew Sawyer exploded for 31 points and Guilbert Francois rolled in the game-winning layup with seven seconds to go, as the King boys basketball team pulled off a stunning postseason upset of second-ranked Greens Farms Academy, 64-62.
King washed out second-ranked Greens Farms' school-record 15-game winning streak and snapped its own nine-game losing streak. King, which has struggled with consistency all season, forced a season-high 20 Greens Farms turnovers.
Greens Farms' record-setting center, Sean Obi, was held to ten points, but his teammates picked him up. Four other Dragons netted double-digit points against the Vikings, including Hunter Eggers (12 points), Tremont Waters (11), Brian Comey and Patrick Ryan (10 each).
The Dragons had no answer for King's Sawyer, however. The career 1,000-point scorer was deadly from beyond the arc, draining six three-pointers on the night. Matt Reggina also had a big night for King, finishing with 18 points.
King (8-15) will face third-seeded Rye Country Day on Friday in the league semifinals at a time to be determined. Greens Farms (18-4) will now wait to discover its seeding in the New England Prepatory School Athletic Council tournament.
