His kindness and concern for others are among reasons for the selection, said Upper School Dean of Students, Hannah Reed.

She characterizes Ben as an "excellent communicator" and as someone who shows concern for his fellow students.

"Whenever he sees something going on, on campus that he has concerns about, he always comes to me directly to seek an understanding, rather than simply talking with his peers," said Reed.

"He has also come forward at various points this year with concerns for the well-being of others; a student he has noticed sitting alone, or a classmate whose humor is starting to cross the line. Rather than ask me to do something, he is always asking for tools to tackle the challenge himself."

Ben belongs to the school's Sci-Fi club and credited with helping to create an environment where "nerdom can be celebrated."

Among efforts, he organized and ran a "Star Wars" marathon, making sure everyone knew they were invited and welcome according to Reed.
