Police began searching the property and area near 89 Norfield Road in Weston on Thursday afternoon after receiving information that possible human remains had been found. The search is connected to the disappearance of Jeannette and Jeffrey Navin of Easton, who were last seen Aug. 4.
State police said they were called to assist at the Weston home around 3 p.m. Thursday. Detectives arrived and recovered the remains, and initiated a search of the area, with help from Weston police and a state police K9 team. State police were still on scene as of 9:30 a.m. Friday and conducting a thorough search.
Diane Hays, who lives about two miles from the scene, was out jogging this morning and was detoured by the road closure. She has two kids who have gone through Jeannette's school and one is there. She said it's been a tough year because a teacher there died recently.
"It's hard to understand that anyone would do this," she said.
The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where they will determine whether they are human or animal, as well as the cause and manner of death, if applicable. If the remains prove to be human, the ME will determine identity, state police said.
The vacant house at 89 Norfield Road belongs to a friend of Kyle Navin, the son of Jeannette and Jeffrey Navin, according to The Hour. Kyle Navin has been listed a person of interest in the case, and is currently in custody on federal gun charges and due to appear in court Friday.
The house is located on a pretty New England country road, within walking distance of the fire department and police station and a short distance down the road from the Norfield Congregational Church. There were several police cars on the scene with lights blinking, and a bank of news cameras was set up on the corner of Norfield Road and Hedgerow Common Friday, awaiting any updates.
Jeannette Navin, 55, a library paraprofessional at Weston Intermediate School and her husband, Jeffrey Navin, 56, owner of J&J Refuse in Westport, were reported missing Aug. 7. They were last seen Aug. 4.
Kyle Navin, 27, operations manager of J&J Refuse, is in federal custody on a charge of possession of a firearm by a drug-addicted person. The gun and drugs were found in a search of his Bridgeport home in connection with his parents' disappearance.
A federal indictment included cellphone records of texts between the father and son in which Jeffrey Navin accused Kyle Navin of killing his mother.
