WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Westport Fire Department is beginning a strategic planning project that will identify the resources needed to deliver high-quality firefighting and rescue services in the 21st century, First Selectman Jim Marpe announced Friday.

To oversee the effort, Marpe has established a Fire Department Strategic Planning Steering Committee.

"Westport has grown and changed substantially since the majority of our original fire stations were built. The nature of the workforce has changed from volunteer to largely professional and the equipment utilized has likewise changed," he said.

The number and size of residential houses have also continued to grow and the construction materials and methods have changed substantially over time which has impacted the intensity and challenges of house fires, Marpe added.

In addition, the nature of the job has also shifted with a greater demand for rescue services related to vehicular accidents on I-95 and the Merritt Parkway.

The Committee will examine these changes and future projections and recommend the best path for the future needs and direction of the department, Marpe said.

Bob Galan, a former Representative Town Meeting member, will chair the committee which will include representatives of various neighborhoods and constituencies throughout Westport; Fire Chief Andy Kingsbury, Assistant Fire Chief Michael Kronick, and Operations Director Dewey Loselle will provide staff leadership.

“I am grateful to all the representatives of the areas of Westport who will give of their time and expertise to put forward the best recommendations. I am confident that with their leadership, our first-class Fire Department will maintain its high level of capability, but with appropriate plans for the future, Marpe stated.
