A K9 officer observed vehicle travel off of the Exit 25 northbound I-95 ramp on Saturday, Jan. 12 at around 6:30 p.m. and a DMV check revealed that the vehicle was stolen out of Bridgeport earlier in the day, Fairfield Police said.

Two officers followed the vehicle into Bridgeport for several miles without activating any lights and when the opportunity arose, the vehicle was boxed in, and the operator taken into custody without incident, police said.

The operator, later identified as 30-year-old Hernan Carlos Aponte initially gave officers a fraudulent name and upon investigation, his real identity was discovered, according to police.

After being taken into custody, officers located three electronic shaving devices still in the boxes, hidden under Aponte’s jacket in an apparent unreported shoplifting, police said. Aponte was wanted out of the three jurisdictions with warrants totaling $50,000.

Aponte was charged with third-degree larceny, interfering with an officer, and possession of drug paraphernalia and was held on the $50,000 bond. He was transported to Bridgeport Superior Court on 01/14/2019.
