Home Health Aide Accused Of Stealing From Fairfield County Client, Police Say

A home health aide has been arrested for allegedly stealing items from a person she cared for in Fairfield County.

Stephanie Sabat, age 37, of Monroe, was arrested on a warrant by Monroe Police on Wednesday, April 28, for the incident which took place in August 2019, said Lieutenant Kevin McKellick of the Monroe Police Department.

According to McKellick, the department received a complaint from a Spring Hill Road resident that her parents noticed items missing from the house and they suspected their new home health aide was stealing from them. 

Sabat, who was employed by Grandview Helping Hands Agency, allegedly stole items worth $959.30, McKellick said.

Detectives investigated the complaint and found that Sabat also stole the complainant’s credit card and made 18 purchases over the course of a week. 

The purchases were made in Bridgeport, Milford, and Stratford and totaled $793.30, he added.

Detectives applied for an arrest warrant and it was granted. 

Sabat was charged with:

  • 18 counts of larceny
  • 18 count of credit card theft by transfer
  • Two counts of identity theft
  • Two counts of forgery

The victim was notified of Sabat’s arrest.

Sabat had three other active arrest warrants at the time of her arrest, two for failure to appear and one for violation of probation.

She was also arrested for the three warrants and was unable to post bonds totaling $51,250.

Sabat is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, April 29.
