The incident took place around 11 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 23, at Burr Mountain Pond in Torrington, said the Torrington Fire Department.

According to the department, five ice anglers had fallen through the ice or were stuck on the ice. An additional bystander also got stuck on the ice when they attempted to help.

Firefighters from the Torrington and Winsted fire departments donned ice rescue suits and removed all six victims who were stuck about 100 feet offshore, the department said.

Four of the people rescued were transported to area hospitals for cold-related injuries.

"This was an extremely difficult rescue that challenged our firefighters," the department said. "They stepped up to the challenge and did an excellent job!"

The department reminded residents that ice is extremely unstable this time of year and should be avoided.
