Darrien L. Penix, 43, of New Britain, was arrested on Monday, Aug. 19, by Bridgeport Police following an investigation into the theft, said Terron Jones, spokesman for the Bridgeport Police.

The crime came to light when the vice president of the Firebirds -- the department's minority organization -- reported to police that he believed Penix, a former president of the group had misused monies from the organization's account through a credit card and the checking account, said Jones.

According to police, the Firebirds claim that Penix had "stolen" $15,230.18, and spent the money on trips, car repairs, and other items.

When Penix found out he was being investigated, he reportedly texted the vice president of the group that he "f..... up royally and that he would turn his keys to the office and would bring a check in today,"' the incident report said.

Penix also inquired through a text if the group was pressing charges and wanted to know what his bond would be so he could bond out.

"These texts appear to indicate guilt on Penix part," the report says.

Penix was charged with larceny and bond set at $50,000. It was not clear if Penix had bonded out.

“We are disappointed to hear of these allegations and will take any further appropriate actions if these charges are found to be true," said Bridgeport Fire Chief Richard Thode.

Thode said per the union contract, Penix has been placed on administrative leave with pay.
