A barbershop owner was arrested after police officers saw a bag of cocaine fall out of his pocket while locking his business, Stamford Police said.

The incident took place around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, when Officers Jamie Torres and Matthew Pompa decided to do some “old fashioned” police work, said Stamford Police Lt. Michael Noto.

"They got out of their patrol cars and starting walking some neighborhoods in the City’s West Side," Noto said.

At one point they found themselves on Richmond Hill Avenue, where they saw a man leaving the Cut Masters Barber Shop at 91 Richmond Hill Ave., Noto said.

The man caught their attention because as he was attempting to lock the establishment up for the night a plastic bag allegedly fell out of his pocket as he removed his keys, police said.

The man, Sean L. Evans, 43, of 1996 Huntington Road, Stratford, was arrested after the officer found the bag contained 14.5 grams of cocaine packaged in 22 individual baggies, he added.

Evans was placed under arrest without incident and charged with possession of narcotics and possession of narcotics with intent to sell. He was released on a $10,000 cash bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 2.

"We are extremely proud of the dedicated self-initiated policed work of Officer Jamie Torres and Matthew Pompa," Noto said on Facebook. "The area they were patrolling has been in the past a problem area for the police department with complaints of drug offenses, weapon offenses and numerous quality of life issues.

"These Officers and this department are dedicated to making that area and the entire City of Stamford safer for our citizens, business and visitors."

Police are asking residents to report any suspicious activity on the anonymous tip line at (203) 977-TIPPS.
