The incident began around 4 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 21, when the family member went to Fairfield Police headquarters and reported that his father was acting erratically after picking up a police report that indicated his wife was having an affair, said Fairfield Police Capt. Robert Kalamaras.
When police went to the Wormwood Road home to check on the man, he made comments to police that he was considering harming himself and had barricaded himself inside the home with several firearms, said Kalamaras.
The Fairfield Police Emergency Services Unit, including trained negotiators, began negotiations in an effort to convince the man to surrender.
After approximately three hours, negotiators were able to get the man to surrender without incident, Kalamaras said.
He was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for evaluation. No one was injured.
“We were very happy with the outcome of this operation. Officers who responded remained steadfast on their mission to protect life and ensure the safety of the community," said Fairfield Chief Chris Lyddy.
The Southwest Regional Emergency Response Team assisted Fairfield Police at the scene.
