WESTPORT, Conn. Gary Conrad, New Canaan's chief financial officer, has been hired as Westport's next finance director, First Selectman Gordon Joseloff announced Tuesday.
"Gary Conrad brings to Westport a wealth of experience in both the municipal and private sector," Joseloff said in a statement. "He is an accomplished financial executive with proven leadership, negotiation, organizational and planning skills that will serve Westport well."
Conrad was among the finalists recommended by a bipartisan search committee headed by Board of Finance Vice Chairman Helen Garten. He succeeds current Finance Director John Kondub. Last August, Kondub announced his intention to retire in February.
A Fairfield resident, Conrad has been the chief financial officer in New Canaan since 1994. Before that, he worked 16 years at AMAX Inc., a worldwide producer of metals and energy, last serving as manager of financial planning and analysis with its Climax Metals subsidiary in Norwalk. He is expected to start in Westport later this month, Joseloff said.
Conrad attended the University of New Haven's executive MBA program and holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Bridgeport.
Kondub became finance director in August 2008. He served as acting finance director after the Feb. 19, 2008, death of Finance Director Donald J. Miklus. A lifelong Westporter, Kondub joined the town's staff in 1976 as an accountant after graduating from Villanova University with a bachelor's in accounting.
"We are deeply grateful for John's years of service to Westport and look forward to a smooth transition," Joseloff said.
