WESTPORT, Conn. -- Hundreds of people enjoyed a sunny day and showed their support for STAR, Inc. Lighting the Way by taking part in the 10th annual STAR Walk, Roll and Stroll in Westport on Sunday.
The yearly event is one of the biggest celebrations and fundraisers for the Norwalk-based STAR, which provides support, services and advocacy for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The nonprofit provides opportunities for people to live full lives with independence and freedom of choice in Norwalk, Westport, Weston, Wilton, Darien and New Canaan.
Sunday's celebration featured games, music, food and face painting before the walk took place. STAR Executive Director Katie Banzhaf, state Sen. Bob Duff and Miss Connecticut Ashley Golebiewski thanked everyone in attendance and celebrated the work of the hundreds of volunteers who put the event together, as well as everyone who contributed donations and efforts to make the event a success.
The crowds were all smiles as they walked the half-mile path down the beach, and then they celebrated with an afternoon of activities. The Marvin School Dancers and STAR's Rubberband both performed to thrilled audiences, and BB the Bluefish from the Bridgeport Bluefish and STORM from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers greeted their fans. There were also demonstrations by the Maritime Aquarium, the Darien Nature Center and Children's Fun Bus.
