District officials said the Sport and Medical Science Academy in Hartford where a 13-year-old boy overdosed and some 40 bags of fentanyl were discovered will remain closed on Tuesday, Jan. 18, while authorities continue to test the building for any traces of fentanyl.

The process could take several days.

The incident began on Thursday, Jan. 13, when the teen overdosed on fentanyl and was rushed to the hospital. The teen died on Saturday, Jan, 15, according to police.

Two other students were also treated for symptoms and released from the hospital.

“The City of Hartford’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), with guidance from the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH), is the entity responsible for ensuring the safe reopening after the presence of fentanyl was discovered in the building,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez said in a letter to parents on Monday, Jan. 17.

Students and staff will not be let allowed to return to the building until DPH tests receive zero tests of any fentanyl present, officials said.
