WESTON, Conn. -- Happy birthday to Weston’s Keith Richards!

Richards, who owns a home in Weston, turns 72 on Friday. The guitarist, singer-songwriter, record producer and actor was born Dec. 18, 1943, in Dartford, Kent, England.

Richards is a founding member of The Rolling Stones in 1962 together with his friend Mick Jagger. He and Jagger began their songwriting partnership in 1963 at the insistence of manager Andrew Loog Oldham.

He has been active as a music producer since the 1960s and credited as producer and musical director on the 1966 album "Today's Pop Symphony." On the Rolling Stones' 1967 album "Their Satanic Majesties Request" the entire band was credited as producer.

During The Rolling Stones' 1972 tour he began singing lead vocals on "Happy," in concert, and has since then typically sung one lead vocal, progressing to two since 1986.

Rolling Stone magazine credited Richards for "rock's greatest single body of riffs" on guitar and ranked him fourth on its list of 100 best guitarists. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1993. He wrote and recorded hundreds of songs, including the monster hit "Satisfaction," one of the defining songs of the era.

His autobiography, "Life," was released in 2010.

In 2012, he joined the 11th annual Independent Music Awards judging panel to assist independent musicians' careers.
