WESTPORT, Conn. — Artist Bethany Brooke loves to paint — and she loves giving back to her community.

The Westport mom of three recently found a way to combine her passions by giving a portion of the proceeds from the sale of her Abstract creations to Al’s Angels, a Fairfield-based nonprofit that helps children and families in need.

“I want people to appreciate its beauty,” she said of her work. “But I want people to also feel good about what they have on their walls.”

Though Brooke, a Wyckoff, N.J. native, dabbled in art through high school and at Barnard College, it wasn’t until she was pregnant with her 8-month-old son that she truly turned her focus to painting.

“I just had the urge to paint,” she said. “And from the time I was three months pregnant to now, I have painted nearly every day. I feel like it’s a force greater than me.”

Most of Brooke’s work is abstract in nature, including her Born and Illusion series. She said she sometimes uses her daily meditation practice as inspiration.

“It’s a flowing process, but to me it doesn’t seem forced,” she said. “I'm a very visceral painter. I kind of just dive in.”

Brooke shows her work at Westport’s Dovecote and on the Internet through social media, including her highly successful Instagram account. She has sold work to collectors in Arizona and California and had inquiries from as far as London, Paris and Dubai.

She and her family have been involved with Al’s Angels for nearly four years, so sharing her newfound success with the group was a natural fit.

“Not a day goes by that we don’t realize how blessed we are,” she said. “As young parents ourselves, anything we can do to help.”

Having worked in the high-powered world of Wall Street finance, Brooke said she loves raising her children and watching her art evolve. She hopes her children will understand her altruism as they get older.

“We’re living in very interesting times right now and, being a mom, you just want to lead by example,” she said.

You can view Brooke’s art at Dovecote, 56 Post Road East, Westport, or on her Instagram page.
