The event at Halo Fitness on Thursday, Sept. 12 is a chance to hear about the mechanisms of acupuncture, and receive a mini-session to experience its calming and restorative benefits.

Potetz hails from Hartford County and moved back to New Canaan from Hawaii last year where she received her master of science in Oriental medicine.

She practices acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine along with a variety of clinical healing techniques including cupping, nutritional counseling, and electro-stimulation at New Canaan Acupuncture.

The business Potetz opened a month ago operates from the office of Dr. Larry Leibowitz on Grove Street.

Potetz, 28,  majored in kinesiology at the University of Connecticut, graduating in 2011.

She lived five years in Hawaii and received her authentic Chinese medicine education under Taoist Master and 64th generation lineage holder Dr. Lillian Chang Y Hsiang of the World Medicine Institute in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Her introductory session next month will cover some of the same topics patients ask about in a typical consultation, Potetz said.

"It's for people who are curious about it," Potetz said. "I have a lot of patients who want to know about the treatment. When they come in, because it's relaxing, I don't want to keep giving information to a patient during treatment. This will be an opportunity to explain acupuncture, its mechanisms in biomedical terms, as well as Chinese medicine theory."

Acupuncture can treat almost any condition including backaches, inflammatory conditions like fibromyalgia and arthritis; sleep disorders and other kinds of sleep problems.

One example might be "dream disturbed sleep," she noted.

"It relates to blood deficiency in Chinese medicine. And I treat a lot of digestive issues as well.

She's treated 40 patients in her first 30 days in business, said Potetz.

Her "results-oriented" approach relies on feedback from the patient.

"To have somebody say my back pain is completely gone, that feels really good. If I don't get results, I switch up the strategies," Potetz said.

Therapies might include electrostimulation on the needles, cupping and Chinese massage or Gua Sha using jade.
